Terms of service
Fair terms, in plain words.
In force from: [date to be set when Dugzi opens to the public] · Last updated 28 October 2026
These terms are the agreement between you and us when you use Dugzi. We have written them to be read. Where the law gives you more rights than these terms, the law wins.
The short version
- Dugzi costs nothing to use today. Nothing becomes paid unless you choose it.
- What you put in Dugzi stays yours. We don't sell it, show advertising or train AI on it.
- Dugzi Mail is new. Keep your current email address for important things, such as your bank, while delivery to other providers settles in.
- Use Dugzi lawfully and fairly. If we act against misuse, we tell you why, and a person reviews any objection.
- You can download your data and leave at any time, at no cost.
1. Who we are
Dugzi is a trade name of AskOwlo B.V., Kattenburgerhof 96, 1018 KG Amsterdam, the Netherlands, Chamber of Commerce (KvK) number 97409618, VAT number NL868039111B01. "We" and "us" in these terms means AskOwlo B.V.
- Help: support@dugzi.com or +31 20 308 6624
- Your data: privacy@dugzi.com
- Reporting misuse: abuse@dugzi.com
- Authorities and legal notices: legal@dugzi.com
2. What Dugzi is
- What's included: Dugzi Account, Dugzi Mail, Dugzi Contacts and this website, with the features you see in them. The mail apps and import formats we support are listed in the product. We will tell you when we add new products; these terms don't promise future features.
- No cost. You pay nothing to use Dugzi today, and nothing becomes paid automatically. If we offer paid plans later, we ask you first, and nothing changes for you unless you choose it. Not paying does not reduce your rights under the law.
- Not switched on yet: AI features and public links to files. A feature we haven't switched on simply isn't there.
- Who can join: anyone aged 16 or older with a mobile number we can send a text message to, including people outside the EU. Your data is kept in the EU wherever you live (see our privacy notice).
- Using Dugzi for a business: if you want to put a business's personal data in Dugzi, such as data about its customers or staff, tell us first. We need to sign a data processing agreement with that business before you do.
- Dugzi is new. You may find things that are slow, rough or that change. Tell us through the feedback link in the apps or at support@dugzi.com. Being new does not lower the standard we must meet: Dugzi must work as these terms and the product describe.
3. Your mail: please read this one
- Receiving mail, and mail between Dugzi members, works from the start, within the safety checks, size limits and the availability of the service.
- Sending to other providers, such as Gmail and Outlook, opens one provider at a time. Mail providers distrust new mail servers at first. Until a provider accepts our mail, a message to it waits in our queue, and you can see why. If it still cannot be delivered when the retry period ends, you get a report that it failed. Your mail may land in the recipient's spam folder in the first weeks. Microsoft (Outlook, Hotmail) usually takes longest, sometimes several weeks. We can't guarantee delivery, because other providers decide what they accept.
- Keep your current email address for anything important for now: your bank, government, health, school and work, and the address you use to recover other accounts. We will tell you when we think Dugzi Mail is ready for them.
- Sending limits. We may limit how many people outside Dugzi a new account can write to each day, to keep everyone's mail out of spam folders. You'll see the limit if you reach it.
- Moving your mail in. Use the file formats Mail shows as supported, and import only mail you are entitled to manage. Keep the original until you have checked how many messages were copied, skipped or failed. Uploaded files expire 24 hours after upload.
- Keeping your old address. You can forward mail from your old address to Dugzi. You set this up at your old provider, and Dugzi never needs your old password. To stop forwarding, switch it off at your old provider as well as in Dugzi. Replies come from your Dugzi address; Dugzi can't send as your old address.
4. Your account
- What we need: a Dugzi address, your name, your date of birth (to confirm you are 16 or older) and a mobile number we can verify (to stop fake accounts). We also ask a gender question; you can choose "Prefer not to say". Please give true details.
- Signing in: with a passkey, a link or code sent to your recovery email, a code from an authenticator app, or a code sent by text message. Dugzi has no passwords.
- Keep your devices and passkeys safe. If you think someone else got into your account, tell us straight away at support@dugzi.com. You are responsible for what you do with your account. You are not responsible for what someone does after breaking in through a fault of ours.
- One person, one account, unless we have agreed otherwise. Don't share or sell your account.
- Your Dugzi address is yours while you have the account. We never give it to anyone else, even after you leave.
- Getting back in uses the methods you set up: your phone, recovery email, passkeys or authenticator app. When you prove you control your mobile number, we show the accounts linked to it, with their names and addresses, so you can pick yours. If that account has another sign-in method set up, you need that too, or you wait seven days. Our support team can explain the steps but cannot skip them for you. Add a second way to sign in before you need it.
- If someone dies or can no longer use their account, we can't hand over its content on request, because it is private. An heir or someone with a court order can write to legal@dugzi.com, and we decide case by case under Dutch and EU law.
5. Using Dugzi fairly
Don't use Dugzi to break the law or to harm others. In particular: no spam or bulk mail to people who didn't ask for it; no phishing, fraud or malware; no harassment, threats or hate; no content that sexually exploits children; no infringing other people's rights; and no attacks on Dugzi or anyone else's systems, including testing for weaknesses outside our security disclosure rules. Our acceptable use rules give the details and are part of these terms.
What we check. Automated checks look for spam, viruses and harmful attachments, without anyone reading your mail. New incoming mail, forwarded mail, the mail you send and mail between members is checked for spam and safety. Imported mail is checked for viruses and harmful attachments. If a required check cannot run, the message waits, is held or is refused; we never skip the check. No check can guarantee that a message is safe. When a person at Dugzi may look at content is explained in our privacy notice.
What we do when something is wrong. We take the lightest step that solves the problem: a warning; slowing or holding outgoing mail; removing a specific item that was reported, if it is clearly illegal or breaks these terms; and, only for serious or repeated misuse, suspending or closing the account. When we restrict your content or account, we tell you why at the same time. We explain what we did, the facts, the rule or law it is based on, whether it was automated, how long and how far it applies, and how you can challenge it. We hold back or delay this explanation only where the law allows it.
If you disagree, reply to our message or write to abuse@dugzi.com. A person reviews it and answers within 14 days. This costs nothing, and you can always go to court or use any other legal route. If we close your account, you can still download your data for at least 30 days. The only exceptions are when the law, the illegal nature of the content or a specific security risk prevents it. If you can't sign in, support gives you a safe way to do this.
Reporting illegal content: write to abuse@dugzi.com, or use the report link where it appears. We confirm that we received your report and tell you what we decided.
6. Your data
- Yours stays yours. You keep all rights in what you put in Dugzi. You give us only the permission we need to store and process it, and to show it to you and the people you choose, for as long as we need to run the service.
- No advertising, no selling your data, and no training AI on your content.
- Where it lives. Dugzi runs in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, with encrypted backups in Amsterdam, Paris (France) and Nuremberg (Germany). Mail to people outside Dugzi, text messages and checks on senders' reputation can involve processing outside the EU. Our privacy notice explains this and is part of what we promise you.
- Security. Connections to Dugzi are encrypted, mail is encrypted in storage, and accounts are kept separate inside our systems. Read how Mail is encrypted, and its limits. Our mail service must be able to read mail to deliver it and to filter spam. No one at Dugzi reads it except as our privacy notice describes.
- Backups and outages. We keep encrypted backups, as the privacy notice describes. A failure can still cause downtime or loss of data. If it does, we restore the service as fast as we can and explain any serious incident. We can't promise that the service will never be interrupted or that no data will ever be lost.
- Copies on your devices. Mail apps can keep copies on your devices. An offline device can't be wiped remotely until it reconnects. Lock your devices and don't keep mail on shared computers.
- Requests from authorities. We check each request, challenge those that are too broad, and hand over only what the law requires, as the privacy notice explains.
- If something goes wrong with your data, we tell the Dutch Data Protection Authority within 24 hours, and tell you without delay when it affects you.
7. Taking your data with you, and leaving
- Download your data at any time, at no cost. Mail exports your messages as an MBOX file, a standard format other mail services can import, and Contacts exports address books as vCard files. If an export is too large or incomplete, write to privacy@dugzi.com and we will provide it.
- Leave at any time, at no cost and without giving a reason. Deleting your account ends this agreement and locks the account straight away. You then have seven days to cancel. After that we erase your data. We erase it from backups within 90 days. We keep a few security records for the limited periods the privacy notice lists. Copies held by the people you wrote to are theirs.
- Switching to another service. Before you delete your account, you can ask support for a read-only period of up to 30 days to move your data. This costs nothing.
8. Changes, and if the service ends
- Changes to these terms. We tell you by email and in Dugzi at least 30 days before a change that matters, and explain what changes and why. Earlier versions are available from support@dugzi.com. If you don't agree, you can leave at no cost before it applies. We never use a change to take away your rights under the law.
- Changes to the service. Beyond keeping it running and secure, we change the service only for good reasons: to meet legal requirements, to deal with security risks, or to keep up with changes in technology. A change never costs you anything, and we explain it clearly. If a change makes your access or use of Dugzi more than slightly worse, we tell you by email in good time beforehand. We say what changes, when, and that you may end the agreement. You can then end it at no cost within 30 days after you receive our email or after the change takes effect, whichever is later.
- If anything about the price or the plan changes for you, we tell you at least 2 months in advance, in Dugzi and by email, and you can leave at no cost.
- If we stop the service, or one of its products, we tell you at least 2 months in advance. Only a court, a regulator or a serious security reason can force us to act sooner. You can keep downloading your data until it closes.
- If we end your agreement, it is either for one of the reasons in section 5 or with 2 months' notice. Either way you can download your data.
9. Your rights as a consumer
- The service must be as promised. Dugzi must be as these terms and the product describe, fit for what mail and contacts are normally used for, and kept secure and up to date. If it isn't, you are entitled to have it put right within a reasonable time and at no cost, and, if we can't or don't, to end the agreement. These rights come from Dutch law (Book 7 of the Dutch Civil Code, based on EU Directive 2019/770). Nothing in these terms limits them.
- Withdrawal within 14 days. You can withdraw from this agreement within 14 days of creating your account, without giving a reason and at no cost. Use "Withdraw from contract here" in Dugzi Account, or write to support@dugzi.com; you may use the model form below, but you don't have to. Your withdrawal takes effect when you send it. Withdrawing deletes your account as described in section 7; a security hold on the account can delay that deletion, but never your withdrawal. You immediately get a confirmation to save, showing your declaration and the date and time you sent it. A link to it works for 90 days, even after your account is closed, so keep the downloaded copy. Because Dugzi costs nothing, you owe nothing for the time you used it.
- Complaints. Write to support@dugzi.com. We reply within two working days and give our answer within 14 days. If we can't agree, you can go to the court where you live in the EU. About your data, you can also complain to the Dutch Data Protection Authority (Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens) or the authority where you live.
10. Responsibility
- We are responsible for damage we cause by breaking this agreement or the law, as the law says. We don't limit that responsibility in these terms.
- We are not responsible for problems caused by events outside our control that we couldn't reasonably have prevented. Examples are a wide internet outage, or another provider refusing or delaying our mail. We will still do what we reasonably can to limit the effect and tell you about it.
- Your responsibility to us is what the law says. In practice, it matters only for damage you cause on purpose or through serious carelessness, for example by sending spam or attacking our systems.
11. Which law applies
- Dutch law applies to this agreement. If you are a consumer living in another country, you keep the protection of that country's mandatory consumer laws where they protect you more.
- Courts: you can bring a claim in the courts of the Netherlands or, if you live in the EU, where you live. We can bring a claim against you only in the courts where you live, if you live in the EU.
- If you live outside the EU, for example in the United States, you are welcome. Your data is kept in the EU, and the GDPR applies to how we handle it wherever you live. Nothing in these terms makes you give up a right your own country's law says can't be given up. These terms contain no arbitration clause and no class-action waiver.
12. The rest
- Research. If you take part in our research, you sign a separate research consent that says what is recorded, who sees it, when it is deleted and how to withdraw. Withdrawing from research doesn't end your account, and deleting your account doesn't cancel anything you are owed for the research.
- The whole agreement. These terms, the acceptable use rules, the privacy notice (including its section on cookies) and what we tell you inside the product (for example about mail delivery to other providers) are the whole agreement. If one part turns out to be invalid, the rest still applies.
- Language. These terms are in English. When we publish a Dutch version, both versions count equally; if they differ, the one more favourable to you applies.
- Keep a copy. You can download a PDF of the version you accepted in Dugzi Account.
